Frank & Cindy on DVD

May 13, 2008

The great doc Frank & Cindy is now available on DVD through the film’s web site,

As seen on This American Life,

When Cindy married a rock star, Frank, in 1983 she imagined a life of glamour.

But the song that propelled Frank to fame, Whirly Girl, would be the only chart-topper from his group, OXO. Years later, out of shape and nearly bankrupt after spending all his money on “gas, food, dry cleaning… and drugs”, Frank is not the vision Cindy married.

Desperate to resuscitate her dream, Cindy furnishes a new studio for Frank in hopes he’ll record another hit. Instead, he’d rather drink. And now, twenty-three years after appearing on American Bandstand, Frank lives sequestered to the basement where he uses coffee cans for a toilet.

In 2005, Cindy’s filmmaker son G.J. begins documenting the situation. After a year of filming, what began as an attempt to mock his stepfather instead becomes a candid portrait on the pursuit of happiness.(IMDb)

It’s a must see for anyone who loves film.

A frequent reader of this blog,( I have very few of those) brought to my attention another song that has really great lyrics:

And it’s been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high

Since I can say I love myself as well
And it’s been awhile

And it’s been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight

And it’s been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste

(excerpts) Staind from It’s been a while

My friend (as John ‘grampy’ McCain would say)

It has been a while that I’ve been able to do any of those things,

KUDOS,(what the hell does that mean anyways?) to you…

Not to get off topic,

but, I heard this one on the radio today

Yeah, I know Fred Durst is a tool

After going to Cinestudio tonight to see Boarding Gate

I am left thinking how great a actress Asia Argento is

Asia Argento

In every role she plays, she ‘comes off’ as so sexual,

every angle, every look, every word spoken, just drips of hot wet dirty shameful sex.

In this film, and most of her roles, she looks ‘dirty’, as in she needs a good bath,

and yes, dirty can be sexy, (anyone remember heroin chic ?)

In this film there is one scene when she is wearing a black bra and panty set,

a pair of high heel open toe stripper shoes, and nothing else but great ink.

And when she takes her shoes off,

the camera pans down and you see her feet are dirty,

and on her, that’s pretty sexy.

And during one scene, she wears a tank top with her bra strap showing,

and the tank and the bra are different colors,

I always love when women do that ( I don’t know why,but I love that)

Before seeing Boarding Gate, I was told it was a turd of a film,

but it’s not,

It may not be the best film I have ever seen,

but for a ‘thriller’ it’s pretty thrilling, and a little titillating

there’s one scene where she puts a belt around Michael Madsen’s neck and chokes him as she’s jerking him off.

I’m thinking these have got to be some of the greatest lyrics ever written…..

“I only know what I’ve been working for
another you so I could love you more
I really thought that I could take you there
but my experiment is not getting us anywhere”

- The Cardigans from My Favorite Game

Just the thought of “another you so I could love you more”……….

Think about it , That’s Love…

The lights are off, and the echo of crinkling plastic wrappers fills the theater.

The admonishment to remain quiet has already run, and now comes the movie equivalent of an appetizer — the trailer. For two minutes, a mini-movie teases the audience with the sweet possibility of potential greatness.

Or at least a good excuse to get out of the global warming for a couple of hours.

Judgment is immediate. As soon as these promotional clips run, the audience murmurs its disapproval or buzzes in excitement.

This is where movie legends are born.

“Joy Division” documentary Trailer

In 1976 four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester, England went to see the Sex Pistols. They formed a band, Joy Division. Three years later it was a matter of art, life and death. Now thirty years later, they are enjoying a larger audience and more influence than ever before with a profound legacy that resonates fiercely in today’s heavily careerist music industry and over-mediated pop culture.

Joy Division was an English rock band that formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. With their dark, cavernous sound and use of synthesizers and electronics, they pioneered the post-punk sound of the late 1970s and the early 1980s. The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer, Ian Curtis. The remaining members reformed as New Order and went on to achieve much critical and commercial success.
